Interview: Cliff Meth, author of The Invincible Gene Colan

Feb 1, 2010

In an industry as old and as fluid as comics, there are many legends. Writers, artists, editors, and more have come and gone and continue to line up to craft the lives of heroes and villains on the printed page. Gene Colan is one of those legends. His work in the 1970s seemed perfectly suited to The Tomb of Dracula (Colan’s broad strokes always seemed to be not so much moving as floating effortlessly, sweeping across the pages, like finely honed mist). But he was just as much at home in the world of superheroes, taking on Daredevil, Captain America, Batman, and more.

Interview: Raina Telgemeier, author of Smile

Feb 1, 2010

Raina Telgemeier’s childhood was painful, mostly because of a horrific accident that damaged her teeth. But just like the rest of us, she experienced the ups and downs of middle and school: friends who turn out not to be so friendly, crushes received and given (and sometimes returned), family dynamics, and deciding what to do with the rest of her life. Smile encompasses all of that, and we discussed it with her.

As I mentioned in our special 2010 ALA Youth Media Awards Newsletter last week, I had the pleasure of being in Boston last Monday when the American Library Association (ALA) announced their winners of some of the biggest book awards of the year. I was so happy to be a part of all the excitement of the day! If you haven't gotten a chance to see the winners and honorees, please take a minute to look over these noteworthy titles. Taking time to recognize the literary contributions of authors is important in the fast-paced technological world of today.

Good interview courtesy of The Onion with Joshua Ferris (THE WE CAME TO THE END), whose new novel, THE UNNAMED, just came out and was an IndieNext pick... The announcement of Apple's forthcoming iPad touched of a firestorm of discussion about books --- digital and tactile --- and how this may/may not change reading. You should really become a Facebook fan and join the debate!

My younger son, Cory, typically rifles through my Netflix choices when they arrive and dismisses most as “girl movies,” “wildly boring” or “way serious.” Occasionally I score well with an action or adventure movie. But somehow last weekend I got him to agree that The Proposal was worth watching, probably because he, like me, is a Sandra Bullock fan. In fact, I think both my boys would pick her to be their mom if I were not available. Well, WHO KNEW that she played the head of a book publishing company in this film? Why did the previews not make THAT clear to me? Her character was over the top in the way that Meryl Streep overdoes Miranda in The Devil Wears Prada, but was endlessly fun. And if you have watched or plan to watch, note that we replayed the part with Bullock and the dog four times! You’ll know what I mean when you see it.

It’s been a while since our last FaithfulReader.com update. I trust that you all enjoyed your holidays and started the New Year off strongly. It was a hectic wrap of 2009, but was spelled nicely by some much needed vacation and family time. My family and I made our annual trip to the Outer Banks for Christmas and New Year’s, and it was a perfect blend of celebrating and relaxing. The Outer Banks is such a special place to us, mainly because of how welcomed we always feel there. It's become a “home away from home” as we visit our favorite haunts and tuck into the house and enjoy escaping for a bit.

When I left you, I was in Boston attending the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting. I had a great time hearing about upcoming titles for spring and summer. Brace yourself as there are some great books coming up. Get to reading your present stack and clear the decks. Do not say I did not warn you. I had the pleasure of meeting Beth Hoffman, the author of SAVING CEECEE HONEYCUTT, who was just terrific. I also got a note from Cristina, one of our readers in Miami, who told me Beth did a terrific event at Books & Books this past Tuesday night, which made me smile. Love when you love the authors I love.
