Even though no one at our house has headed back to school in years, there is something about September that still has a feeling of settling into the back-to-school routine. Last week, my social media feeds were filled with “first day of school” photos, where students were in their specially selected outfits, and the younger ones were holding chalkboards with everything from what grade they were entering to their future career choices. And from there, the routines picked back up, and the unscheduled days of summer were backburnered.

HEMLOCK ISLAND is the eponymous setting for Kelley Armstrong's new stand-alone horror novel. Just the name of the island is a clue that it could be a dangerous place to visit. Laney, a divorced teacher who just published her first book, owns a beautiful house on the island. It was a gift from her ex-husband, Kit, when he walked away from their marriage. Laney must visit it because the current renters left in a huff after complaining about a blood-stained closet door. That, in conjunction with other strange happenings, causes her to investigate what's going on there. Read More

Laney Kilpatrick has been renting her vacation home to strangers. But broken belongings and campfires that nearly burn down the house have escalated to bloody bones, hex circles, and terrified renters who have fled after finding blood and nail marks all over the guest room closet. When Laney shows up to investigate with her teenage niece in tow, she discovers that her ex, Kit, has also been informed and is there with Jayla, his sister and her former best friend. Then Sadie, another old high school friend, charters over with her brother, who’s now a cop. There are tensions and secrets, whispers in the woods and, before long, the discovery of a hand poking up from the earth. Then the body that goes with it. But by that time, someone has taken off with their one and only means off the island.

About the Book
A stand-alone horror novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong.
Laney Kilpatrick has been renting her vacation home to strangers. The invasion of privacy gives her panic attacks, but it’s the only way she can keep her beloved Hemlock Island, the only thing she owns after a pandemic-fueled divorce. But broken belongings and campfires that nearly burn down the house have escalated to bloody bones, hex circles, and now terrified renters who've fled after finding blood and nail marks all over the guest room closet, as though someone tried to claw their way out...and failed.
When Laney shows up to investigate with her teenaged niece in tow, she discovers that her ex, Kit, has also been informed and is there with Jayla, his sister and her former best friend. Then Sadie, another old high school friend, charters over with her brother, who’s now a cop.
There are tensions and secrets, whispers in the woods and, before long, the discovery of a hand poking up from the earth. Then the body that goes with it. But by that time, someone has taken off with their one and only means off the island, and they’re trapped with someone --- or something --- that doesn’t want them leaving the island alive.

When Anne Perry passed away earlier this year, I was devastated. I had been reading her books since the very beginning of her career and have reviewed them for the better part of the last two decades. I simply cannot imagine a holiday season without her annual Christmas novels (although we will get one more this year when A CHRISTMAS VANISHING releases in November). Read More

About the Book
Elena Standish investigates the murder of a fellow MI6 agent near the country estate of one of England’s most influential families, in this gripping mystery from New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry.
Not far from the sprawling grounds of Wyndham Hall, the body of longtime MI6 agent John Repton is found, shot dead with a single bullet to the heart. The corpse’s proximity to the estate sends ripples of concern through the intelligence community: Repton was killed while surveilling the members of a household with alleged ties to fascists who threaten the security of the country, as Hitler’s influence spreads across Europe. Elena Standish is assigned the case, thanks to her new connection to the Wyndham family: Her older sister, Margot, is being courted by Lady Wyndham’s brother.
Elena secures an invitation to Wyndham Hall for herself and a companion --- her colleague, James Allenby. To covertly investigate Repton’s murder, the pair must uncover the true loyalties of the people in the house while protecting Margot from her beau’s potentially dangerous relatives. But Elena is torn, for her widowed sister has finally found happiness after years of sorrow and having to take down the Wyndhams would destroy Margot’s new relationship.
As Elena and Allenby dig deeper into the Wyndham family’s nefarious connections, Margot grows suspicious. Can Elena reconcile her political and professional obligations with her loyalty and love for her sister? Will Elena and Allenby uncover their colleague’s killer? In THE TRAITER AMONG US, Anne Perry raises the stakes --- for Elena, MI6 and the future of Britain.
