Silence Was Golden

For the past couple of months, my cell phone has not made sounds when I receive texts. When people text, they typically assume you have heard their message come in. Not me! Hours can go by before I look at my phone. Until this week!

My Fitbit decided to sync with my phone this week. I did nothing to make it happen. Now, throughout the day, my wrist is buzzing with text and email alerts. I also have not realized how many retail alerts I have been signed up for. I will be unalerting myself from those this weekend!

I saw leaves falling off the trees this week, and I am ready to glue them back on to keep summer going. But we are getting ready to bring you some great fall reading.

On Tuesday, September 15th at 8pm ET, we will be hosting our “Bookaccino Live” Fall Preview evening program. I will be talking about a number of books releasing this fall that we think you will enjoy reading. Included will be fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction. Click here to sign up.

My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Shari Lapena. Her new thriller, GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER, is an instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller, as well as a “number one” library hold and a Goodreads “most wanted to read” title. It also is a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection.

GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER centers on Jill and Ted, a privileged Manhattan couple who live in a Brooklyn Heights brownstone. Shari chose this as their home due to her personal fascination with these properties, using a coffee table book of floor plans and history for research. The two kill Ted's wealthy older brother, Greg (setting it up to look like a sailing accident), in order to inherit his estate and preserve their lifestyle. The settings throughout the book become characters of their own, and it is very interesting to see how this murder affects each character. 

Paul Ramirez, a special agent with the Coast Guard Investigative Service, immediately senses that Jill and Ted are lying, and he makes it his mission to rattle their cage, even though he lacks evidence. Their cleaning lady, Nadya Sokolov, is a Russian immigrant and has intimate knowledge of the household. Paul and Nadya serve as foils to Jill and Ted, representing working-class perspectives that expose the couple's carelessness and privilege.

We are featuring GOD’S COUNTRY, the 22nd installment in William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor series and an upcoming Bets On selection, in our New Release Spotlight.

Preparing for a family trip into the Boundary Waters, Cork O’Connor is troubled by ominous visions about his future. Ignoring the warnings, he uncovers signs of violence while searching for his missing friend, Cordell Bishop. Soon, he is forced to negotiate with dangerous criminals who are seeking a hidden stash. Cork grapples with his darkest instincts as he helps others escape and eventually takes justice into his own hands.

I often watch television while I answer email. Many times I look up and have no idea what is going on!

It is supposed to rain all weekend, so I have my reading lined up. I started the aforementioned NOT A WORD yesterday, and Linwood Barclay already pulled me in with a twist! Next up will be the aforementioned MOTHER DAUGHTER SISTER STRANGER by Hank Phillippi Ryan, for which I also have a review copy of the audio, and I was listening as I ran errands today. Speaking of which, we are taking off the week before Labor Day, and my reading plans are getting prepped. Some people pack suitcases. I stack books to read for a three-minute trip to the pool.

We have been having peaches shipped in from Colorado for the past couple of weeks. We “discovered” Colorado peaches a few years ago when I read Shelley Read's GO AS A RIVER. Earlier this summer we had Georgia peaches. Though we love Jersey peaches, too, the others are just sweeter. I am loving peach, burrata, arugula and pistachio salad with a peach balsamic vinaigrette. I have yet to make a peach pie! 

I have been making corn muffins with blueberries and fresh corn. We have a local farm stand, Malanga's, where we pick up produce. We stop there a couple of times a week. There is something lovely about summering at home. I loathe traffic, and I overpack. I need at least one suitcase just for books!
