Temperatures this morning were in the 30s, and they popped into the 60s this afternoon. I am very ready to start seeing buds on trees, though I think I have to wait a tad longer for that!
I have had a crazy week as so much has been going on. To keep me relaxed, I have been lighting candles in my office. Most days have been three-candle days, meaning that I light three at a time. I rearranged part of my office a couple of weeks ago, and while doing this, I found a basket of candles that I have not used. So I have been enjoying the act of lighting them up and seeing those flickering lights. Ommmm...I can feel myself unwinding as they are visible on the table next to my desk.
Mercury has moved out of retrograde, which means that perhaps now things will move along a lot more smoothly. To those of you who are flying these days, may I recommend that you download an audiobook to listen to as you wait to get through TSA? My husband flew back from Austin on Wednesday, and even with all the documents he has that are supposed to speed up getting through security, he was on line for an hour and a half. Now that could have been the perfect time to listen to an audiobook.
My current listen is IT GIRL by Allison Pataki, which I am really enjoying. I know Allison is on the road now, so I'm hoping to set up an interview with her when she's back home. I confess to knowing nothing about Evelyn Nesbit, the inspiration for the book's main character, or the role that she played as a Gibson Girl during the Gilded Age and what happened to her in what was labeled “the Crime of the Century.” Allison has a way of bringing me into a story and making me feel like I was there.
Barrie Kreinik narrates the audiobook, as she did for the last two books that Allison wrote. I know that her narration is enhancing my experience.
As I mentioned last week, today I gave a presentation at The College Woman’s Club of Westfield. What a terrific audience they had! Instead of doing a book preview, I walked them through the life cycle of a book before publication, using IT GIRL as my subject.
It was a lot of fun to do, and from their comments afterwards, I felt like it was a huge success. They had some excellent --- and smart --- questions about book publishing, and it was wonderful to hear how the attendees engage with books and authors, as well as a couple of people who spoke to me afterwards about starting a book club within the club.
Thank you to Annmarie Puleio for suggesting me to the luncheon committee. Annmarie and I have attended so many events together, and I appreciate how she champions Bookreporter. Thanks also to Susan Kowalenko, the Club president, and Alyssa Welsch-Rovito, the Chairperson of this lovely event, for having me as the guest speaker. I am hoping that some of the club members join us at some of our virtual events and subscribe to this newsletter. Each place had one of our bookmarks at it!
I am reading DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON, and once again Lisa See has written brilliantly on a topic that I know little about. I feel like I am in Los Angeles in the late 1870s when it was a dusty place, not at all like what we visualize now. I only am about 100 pages in, but already her three characters --- Dove, Petal and Moon --- have captivated me!
And yes, for those who are wondering, one of these women has bound feet, the idea of which had us all scrambling to see what that looked like when we read SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN. You will be hearing lots more about this book from me before it comes out on June 9th.
We hosted our “Bookaccino Live” Spring Preview event on Wednesday evening. I presented 52 books that are either out now or soon to be released this spring that we think you will enjoy reading. Pamela Kramer has our review and says, “Those who read BLOOD MOON will appreciate the parallelism in the two stories…. The gripping execution, nonstop action, impeccable timing and pitch-perfect dialogue are what we expect from Sandra Brown, all leading to a very satisfying ending.”
Through a letter cataloging the small objects she plans to leave behind, 92-year-old Flo Greene reflects on her life, reveals long-held secrets, and embarks on late-life adventures that unexpectedly transform both herself and the people around her in Elizabeth Berg’s new novel, LIFE: A LOVE STORY.
According to Norah Piehl in her review, “LIFE: A LOVE STORY, a wise and wonderful novel from beloved author Elizabeth Berg, is a good reminder that it's never too late to form new bonds and connections --- and that those connections are far more important than the things we leave behind.”

Joy wrote, “Thank you for the copy of THEO OF GOLDEN! I loved this book. The descriptive writing and the thoughtful way each character unfolds, especially Theo, pulled me into the story. By the end, I was deeply moved. I forget many stories after I read them, but this one will stay with me.” You can see Joy with her prize above.
Cheri wrote, “Good morning and TGIF! Thank you, once again, for two great 'Bookaccino Live' events. I use these lists to help me choose my book club books for the next few months. This season seems to be packed with some of my favorite authors. I received an advance reading copy of DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON by Lisa See, and I totally agree with you. This is a great book and will make book club discussions lively. Keep up the good work, and keep on reading!!!”
Ann wrote, “In answer to your question about book clubs and sharing in between get-togethers, my group is constantly doing that. 'Have you heard about so-and-so's new book? I read the best book! Here's a book, I think you'll love it.' In my group, we all get excited about new books and old ones we have just come upon, and some of us enjoy surprising another with the gift of a book.
“I am 89 and have so many books on my piles. I imagine I'll never get to read them all, but they are there, and I love finishing a book and having the opportunity to pick the next one from those waiting to be held. Yes, I am spoiled. I love my usual authors and their books (some great series), and I truly enjoy meeting a new author. And I enjoy giving the books away to family, friends, retirement centers, nursing homes, etc. It seems older folks continue to be avid readers and not so much on phones, etc. Grateful to you and your staff for keeping us all updated and so much MORE!”
Lorraine wrote, “I think the problem of feeling like you’ll never read all the books you want to read, which I fear, has intensified as SO many really good books have come out in 2026 alone. Then you realize, as I have, that you missed so many of the authors’ earlier works. By the way, I loved LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY. Two other spirited books like it: THE LAST SPIRITS OF MANHATTAN and ANTIQUE. Many thanks for what you and your team do.”
I heard this week that Jane Fonda is set to star in the Lionsgate film adaptation of THE CORRESPONDENT by Virginia Evans, and a TV adaptation of Elle Cosimano’s FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT is headed to Peacock with Lang Fisher and Tina Fey adapting it. I love when books inspire movies and TV shows!
A quiet weekend is ahead. I have paperwork scattered everywhere that I am determined to clean up. It’s filing time. I have these great binders here with glassine folders in them, and I am buckling down to get them all taken care of. If the weather cooperates, I want to get to some of the garden cleanup that never happened last fall. It's time to figure out which hydrangeas to prune and which to leave alone. Hello, YouTube videos!
Read on, and have a great week.

YOU WITH THE SAD EYES by Christina Applegate
YOU WITH THE SAD EYES: A Memoir by Christina Applegate (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Christina Applegate
Christina Applegate came of age on sets and stages. What started as a financial necessity soon became an emotional escape from a tumultuous home life. She rocketed to stardom on the sitcom “Married...with Children” and went on to captivate audiences in classics like Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Anchorman and Dead to Me. Then it all stopped. A multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021 confined her to a king-sized bed and the company of memories she’d rather forget: memories of the self-doubt and body dysmorphia that stalked her meteoric rise, of her mother’s fight against addiction and abuse after her father left, and of the tax life had taken on her body and mind that was suddenly coming due. Now, at her most intimate and vulnerable, she unveils a story not even those closest to her fully know. Reviewed by Jana Siciliano.

STAY ALIVE: Berlin, 1939-1945 by Ian Buruma (History)
Audiobook available, read by Ian Buruma
In 1939, when Ian Buruma’s epic opens, Berlin has been under Nazi rule for six years, and its 4.3 million people have made their accommodations to the regime, more or less. When war broke out with Poland in September, what was most striking at first was how little changed. Unless you were Jewish. Then life, already hard, was soon to get unfathomably worse. Buruma gives tender attention to the Jewish experience in Berlin during the war, weaving its thread into the broader fabric of this marvelously rich and vivid mosaic of urban life. The distillation of a broad-gauged reckoning with a vast trove of primary sources, including a surprising number of interviews with living survivors, STAY ALIVE is a study in extremes --- depravity and resilience, moral blindness and moral courage, pious bigotry and unchecked hedonism.
