Editorial Content for Plant Lady

A young South Korean woman leaves the village where her family and memories reside when she can no longer bear life there and relocates to Sejin City. In a forgotten part of the city, the woman creates Plant Shop, a space where she can find comfort growing rosemary bushes, petunias and rubber trees. It is also a place where she can carve a new future for herself. 

Yoohee tends her garden out in front, while inside she grows a lush forest of greenery. It has been a struggle for her, but after much hard work and a lot of love, Plant Shop is flourishing and she is content. However, not everyone who comes through the front door is content. Sometimes, angry men drop by, scowling and mistreating her plants. One or two try to win her heart --- not by building a true relationship, but through lies and trickery. Occasionally, broken, trembling women come to her and whisper horror stories.

Yoohee listens with a careful ear to her customers in order to understand what their needs are, not only in a plant but maybe even beyond that. She discovers a few patrons who have special needs, thorny problems that she takes care of after Plant Shop closes for the day. As a bonus, she finds a new and improved way to fertilize her garden. Her plants thank her, as do her customers.
 
By day, Yoohee nurtures seedlings and lovingly cares for her garden. By night, she weeds out the toxic walking among us. She does not tolerate unkindness --- whether it be to the plant world or to humans. She has been on the receiving end of cruelty, so she knows how much it hurts. She believes no one should have to put up with it. 
 
Of course, Yoohee’s nocturnal activities can’t go unnoticed forever. The men who have gone missing weren’t homeless street people. They had visibility. And they had more than one thing in common. While each of them has been described as a nasty, revolting, even criminal waste of humanity, and none of them had many friends, at least someone does realize that they disappeared. And all of the men were seen around Plant Shop. 

After some time, Detective Cha Dokyung makes the connection. But how can he put a case together? He has talked to Yoohee, but she gives up nothing. And since the men had such horrible reputations, he’s having trouble finding anyone who even cares that they’re dead. So while he has his suspicions, he is stuck spinning his wheels.
 
Haven’t we all known at least one person whose death, right or wrong, we sort of believed was good karma? Yoohee so very nicely eliminates evil from our world that it’s hard to fault her for what she has done. Despite its dark plot, PLANT LADY is a novel of redemption and healing. Yoohee brings us her story with grace and humor. And gravitas. There isn’t another author alive who writes like Minyoung Kang...at least not one currently on the hit list.
