I went back to his first book and have now read them all (in order, of course). I am looking forward to the new one, which is due out soon.

I would say THE SPACE BETWEEN US by Thrity Umrigar. It is the story of two women in modern-day India. One woman, Bhima, is the servant of the other woman, Sera. We learn about their lives both separate from each other and together. They have a deep friendship, which comes to an abrupt end with a betrayal by another character. It is a fascinating look into life in India and into friendship and betrayal.

THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES - What a wonderful book. Everyone must read it. It was very moving and I did not want it to end. In fact, I read it twice. The main character has a terrible relationship with her father and her mother is dead. She runs away from her verbally abusive father to search for the place that her mother visited years ago. All she has to go on is a picture with a notation on the back. She ends up finding this place and a wonderful relationship and story develops.

THE SMOKE, Tony Broadbent - The book is set in 1947 London, and the main character is Jethro, `creep` burglar. He is blackmailed and forced to break in to the Russian Embassy. Apart from a fast-paced storyline, there are some well-portrayed descriptions of smog-laden London. The local pubs and cafes that Jethro frequents, the Saturday afternoon street market, cries of the vendors, smells of fried food --- it is like dropping back into a little capsule of time. The novel also includes some interesting social commentary of that time. The story is told through the eyes of Jethro and we are right there with him, as we `creep` into the Russian Embassy, always concious of our escape route, the length of silk rope, suspended from the sky light. Jethro keeps a whispered commentary in our ears, each thought becomes our own so we are able to plan his next move with him. He tells the story in his own words, cockney-slang and with always his off-beat optimistic sense of humour. This can lull the senses, give a false impression. Because this is not a light-hearted `caper` story, in spite of the constant humour of the narrative. It is very much a novel of the street-crime and gangs in London, during those early pre-war years. And, believe me, Jethro is `tooled up` and ready for them. NB, Nice touch was the page cockney-rhyming slang and the meanings, at the front of the book.

STILLNESS by Richard Mahler! This is one of the best books I have read, and I still read through it many times for their suggestions about alone time --- the benefits of it, where to find it, what to do when you are alone, etc. Solitude is one of the best things for me, so this book was so helpful to me. Also top on the list are MY SERVER IS DOWN and RIVER TIPS AND TREE TRUNKS.

I am just getting around to reading THE BROKER by John Grisham. He is such a good writer that it takes me a while to decide whether the book I have read is as good as it seems at the time. My husband and I spent part of a tour in Venice last year, and THE BROKER brings it all back so wonderfully. I am loving it.

I have just finished reading DINNER WITH ANNA KARENINA by Gloria Goldreich. This is a terrific book that details the lives (reading and personal) of a book group comprised of women from many different backgrounds, ages, and walks of life, who only read literature. This book gave me an insight into some of the literature titles discussed, as well as a look at the lives of other women. Highly recommended.
