What is your ideal place to read, real or imagined?
CurlyBil2@aol.com
I do have a personal library with a recliner, walls of filled bookshelves, a built in desk, an electric fireplace, a TV and even 2 sofas in case I tire of sitting up. The refrigerator full of cold drinks is just around the corner, and the bar is in the next room. Perfect place for curling up with whatever book suits my fancy on these cold winter evenings.
Shell725@aol.com
The best place is in a big, comfy chair with excellent lighting and an adjacent table to hold a nice hot cup of tea.
tsutton1@shawneelink.com
My favorite place to read is in bed. After a long day at work and a two hour commute I love getting my latest book or books and a glass of wine and my most comfy clothes and stretching out with my back proped up. Of course this includes my two dogs a miniture pincher and a jack russel terrier. One under
the covers and one on top. I choose my bedroom because I can close the door and block the noise of the TV which is important to the rest of my family. I also have a office since my oldest child got married and left home where I keep my books. I love to buy books at auctions. I love the feel of these books the illustrations. I don't know why but time seems to move slower when I read compared to when I watch TV. I also feel more in control of my time. And time is so precious.
Britadon@aol.com
Reading in bed is still my favorite. But, I dream of doing so in a house that someone has cleaned, rather than in one that I know I should clean instead of reading.
DADSHORTLE@aol.com
Hello. My favorite place to read is out on the side patio in the sunshine with my shirt off. I'm an outdoor person. Sunshine is my friend. I'm a white Irishman but in the summer I'm a different breed.
J90722@aol.com
My ideal reading spots are at the kitchen table or in a huge comfortable wing back chair in the corner of the living room. During the summer, it's the patio...but the chair should not be too comfortable because I fall asleep easily after reading a page or two!
VABryden@aol.com
In a hammock in the shady flower garden, gently warm breeze.
Zerocol226@aol.com
Well, my ideal place would be somewhere that I can let my imagination run free without comments from others. It would be quiet and personal. Almost like my own personal sanctuary from the world around me. I could also write and read my poetry aloud to anyone I wish to hear. So my place may only exist in my mind for now but one day ill make this location a reality.
Onceuponamidnte@aol.com
My favorate places to read are in the bathtub and in my bed. My ideal place to read would be in a king size feather bed with a fireplace burning in the room, my fiance' beside me reading one of her books, with an everful coffee pot and a supply of chocolate on the nightstand within arms reach.
JDitz33492@aol.com
I think the quietest and most relaxing place to read at my house is in my bedroom. No tv's blaring. Just quiet!
Amie6748@aol.com
On the beach in front of the old Maui Lu hotel on Maui listening to the ocean....
Blkbak@aol.com
Anyplace where I can be in a reclining position!
Brninbk510@aol.com
My favorite place to read is on my bed w/my trusty dog, Buddy, at my side. Second favorite place is on the couch in the family room.
ZMEFLYHI@aol.com
Lying on the chaise lounge at the pool.
DPanzy@aol.com
I think that would have to be the beach.
GBKSBK372@aol.com
best place to read? the bathtub!!!
JMath2244@aol.com
My ideal place to read is my den with the stereo on to the classical musical station. Pure Heaven.
KRKORON@aol.com
For me, it's a tie:
Either in a really comfortable chair, by the fire, with a glass of wine... Or... At the beach on a warm day!
judyisat@earthlink.net
This is my true reading place. I have a back porch that has tree branches overhanging it, plus large beautiful trees, birds, and flowering bushes surrounding it. I sit on a chaise lounge, with my cat in my lap. She sleeps, purrs and nestles in my lap. I read, read, read, enjoying the fresh air, music of various bird chirpings and buzzing of the bees. Since I live in Fl. this is possible on most days of the year.
JEarh13191@aol.com
anywhere I can hear the ocean!!!
DaNIisIs420@aol.com
I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED READING SINCE THE FIRST DAY I LEARNED HOW TO READ. I GIVE ALL BOOKS A CHANCE, BUT THERE ARE ALWAYS THOSE FEW SPECIAL BOOKS THAT ALWAYS HAVE A SACRED PLACE IN MY HEART. I KNOW THIS MAY SOUND SILLY BUT EVER SINCE I FIRST STARTED READING I ALWAYS HAD THIS DREAM OF BEING ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH A BOOK IN MY OWN SECRET PLACE. THE PLACE THAT I HAVE ALWAYS IMAGINED GOING TO (BELIEVE-IT-OR-NOT) WAS TO GO AWAY ON MY OWN CLOUD. I ALWAYS PICTURED MYSELF ON THE MOST FLUFFY AND COMFORTABLE CLOUD, ALL WARM AND
COZY FROM THE SUN. I WOULD JUST LAY THERE ALL DAY LONG ON MY WHITE FLUFFY CLOUD ALL COMFY JUST READING BOOK AFTER BOOK. THIS WAS ALWAYS MY DREAM PLACE TO JUST GET AWAY AND READ. WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF WE COULD ALL HAVE OUR OWN CLOUD TO READ ON?
SavutiGal@aol.com
I just bought a new house that had a "bonus room". I had bookcases made, filled it with my favorite antiques (from my generous parents). It has great light and is small enough to be very cozy. NO TV!! Also, was in Africa once and they had very, very large basket-like things filled with wonderful pillows...you could get in and cozy up with a book...this was also on a beach
with open sided tent to keep the sun off. A spot I will never forget!
MaryAllred@aol.com
I live on 15 acres in the country and when the weather is good, which is most of the year, I have an area I call "Mary's Park" with an old fashion porch swing that I love to sit in and read my favorite books. There I can read, think, meditate, write, listen to the birds and enjoy the surrounding nature that has been preserved just for me..
Kreckmd1@aol.com
1. My big leather chair in my room with bookcases. 2. At my desk. Never in bed.
THE0521@aol.com
When I was a child I climbed my favorite tree where I had made a nest high up in the hemlock. The tree would sway gently and I would transport to where ever the book could take me. When I couldn't see enough to read, I knew it was past time to go in to dinner. Now that I am much older and wider, I hide in a recessed window seat behind the outer curtin that shields the window seat from the rest of the room. Lots of pillows and privacy, but once again light fading is my nemisis and there is no light fixture and I depend on mother nature.
ROSpring@aol.com
On the couch in the living room.
Tucson7836@aol.com
it would be in a secret garden with animals and birds of all kinds, and of course beautiful flowers and all the books I've always wanted to read.
RocKat81@aol.com
Favorite place to read --patio - with my dogs and cigar.
WBtrez@aol.com
My imagined place is a big soft cushy chair with an ottoman, by a window with gentle sun streaming in. The room has a fireplace which makes it warm and cozy and maybe my favorite cat nearby.
deedledeedum@msn.com
I live in Florida and I love sitting out on my patio with the sky, grass, water, ducks and birds all outside my screens while I'm reading. The openess and smell of grass is exhilarating, especially while being immersed in a good read.
BettyAnnH@aol.com
is on a comfy, overstuffed chair next to the fireplace, in front of the window with a view overlooking the lake. On lazy Sunday's it's especially wonderful when I sit in that chair, sun shining in and warming me as I cozy in with favorite books.
Sigh ... since that place is in my dream house yet to come ... my favorite spot now is on my lazy boy recliner, next to the radiator, with a hot cup of coffee, maybe a treat or two within arms reach ... and more then likely during these cold winter days with a throw on my feet to keep me warm and cozy. These are rare moments as I am Mom to a toddler .. but when they come they are most welcome and so refreshing.
Cairo1953@aol.com
In our fast paced society, where noisy cell phones, sardine-packed trains & tight schedules, limit reading time - I would therefore love to "imagine" myself on a secluded island (with the exception of a library). There would be absolutely no interruptions, only the welcoming sound of the ocean waves
hitting against the rocks, glorious singing of wild birds & the gentle sound of trees swaying from the tropical island winds. No beepers, no clocks, no schedules...........only the pure pleasure of READING!
Bobbewig@aol.com
Personal library with floor-to-ceiling bookcases, big/oversized lounge chair, reading lamp.
DThomas201@aol.com
Out under a warm sun laying by the pool
Msreb@aol.com
My favorite "imagined" place to read is on a chintz, chaise lounge in my bedroom, with a small round table next to it with a cup of hot coffee on it and a floor lamp over my left shoulder giving me ample lighting. To add to the cozy admosphere, it needs to be raining or snowing outside. Another question,....what is the best lighting to read by? What is the proper lamp? height? type of bulb? I think the best is reading outside in natural light but for most of us that's not do-able all the time.
GRDNSW@aol.com
My ideal place to read is on the couch in my living room. I sit at one corner next to the lamp. I read better when it's still daylight and no one is around to disturb me. I also like to read on my porch. It is a closed in porch that is almost like another living room. I have a chair and love seat that have seating hung by rope (similar to a hammock) attached to a rough
wooden rocker frame. They are very comfortable and are an ideal place to read. I feel like I'm escaping from the rest of the world, While I sit with
a book.
alemap90@aol.com
My most favorite and certaninly the most quiet place I like to go is at a cemetary located in a little town just 13 miles from here. It is set in a wooded area. In the back, theres a dead-end turn around and several residents that have been there since the 1700's. Just hearing the wind in the trees, the birds and the way the light shines through at this area has truly got to be the most peaceful, relaxing and the area I most enjoy reading my favorite book.
RCPOLEN@aol.com
I have that Gazebo in my Japanese garden that you mentioned and it is my ideal place to settle into a book and listen to the distance sounds from my waterfalls as they babble over rocks into my fish ponds and as I occasionally lift my eyes from my book only to catch a glimpse of the many species of birds that make my garden their home.
Dwarfie4@aol.com
The beach
CShank1246@aol.com
in the shade of the pool or beach or in my dreams anywhere in the south of France.
DonCaro@aol.com
My ideal place to read is while floating in my pool during the summer.
GramMag7@aol.com
I'm retired and live alone. I can read anywhere or anytime I please. Some older folks complain about being alone but when I need company I arrange it. Not a bad life. :)
sharonsgibbs@aol.com
In the basement there is an old stuffed , square chair in a corner under the staircase with a lamp that I put there. It is great to go down there in summer when it is hot and sticky as we have no AC.
jpeters5@san.rr.com
One of my favorite places to read is in a sand chair on the beach at La Jolla, CA, but I read every and anywhere/even cereal boxes at the kitchen table/so where IS the best place? Everywhere!!! carpe diem
JMccorm817@aol.com
Summer days has to be a hammock under the apple tree with a cool drink ( lots of ice) and a tape recorder playing soft classical music in my ear. Winter winds howling-- and it is a wing back chair beside the fireside, hot chocolate beside me. The floor to ceiling bookcase is right behind me as is the bay window overlooking the icy exterior.
LGreenw832@aol.com
I have 2 places....the den...in a big easy chair and the bedroom...in the evening.
KendraPT@aol.com
The best real place I have to read is currently in front of a nice fire in the fireplace in my big comfy chair with my warm blanket and my cat Patches on my lap purring or snuggling. My ideal DREAM place would be a nice hammock in not too much shade and not too much sun on the coast of Martha's Vineyard....that would be heaven.
darend@erols.com
My favorite place to read is in bed under the covers about a 1/2 hour to an hour before I go to sleep. It relaxes me and I love it.
Mag1pie@aol.com
On the Metrolink train to and from work.
DPJ1249@aol.com
Here's one you won't here often -- I travel a lot and one of my favorite places to read is while I am eating alone in a restaurant while on the road. The alternatives are to either stare at my food or at the strangers around me.
Nana1248@aol.com
In front of the fire, snow or rain softly falling outside, great music in the background and a stack of favorite books on the table. (Oh and the phone has been turned off!)
JeanIrish@aol.com
My favorite place to read is on our boat. We anchor in a nice secluded cove. Winter is the best time. It is usually raining with a small wind blowing, but inside we are warm and comfortable. Some times I sit so I can see out side but lots of times I go down below in our comfortable bed and grab a book
and snuggle down under the comforter, with a hot cup of tea, and just read. There is nothing to interrupt us, no noise except the wind outside.
Catlaw13@aol.com
i have a fabulous deep purple chaise lounge in my living room, and i read my favorite books and magazines with my cat in my lap, purring as if he, too, enjoys the reading material!
karen4191@home.com
Bachelor Brothers Bed and Breakfast, failing that, my Barcolounger.
Xwxman@aol.com
I have taken an upstairs bedroom and made it into my library. I sit in my Lazy Boy chair and enjoy my solitude.
Bookgranna@aol.com
Picture a cottage on a lake in the middle of the Maine woods. Sitting next to the dock is a pontoon "party barge" boat. I like to go down to the boat and sit there all alone and read, as other boats go by and the boat gently moves up and down. The sounds of loons calling to each other in the distance and the smell of the pine trees make it the most relaxing place I can read. And this is not a fantasy - this is real. Aren't I lucky?
Mamdad@aol.com
my favorite place to sit back and induldge in a good book is my back porch curled up in my chaise lounger. It is completly glassed and bricked in and i am able to get all the sunlight and hear the birds sing and when it is raining it is just wonderful to hear the rain on the window panes. To me that is like being in heaven and i can escape form the world and the kids and the
animals. Thank you for letting me share my place with you.
LLigh10364@aol.com
My ideal place to read a book is anywhere. I read in my car, at my daughter's basketball practice, at softball games before they start, in the bathroom (because I can lock the door.), outside, anywhere and everywhere.
Phox48@aol.com
My favorite place to read is in bed, and at the end of the day. I read for an hour or so for pure enjoyment, and it puts me in the right frame of mind for sleeping -- relaxes me. My second choice would be on the front porch.
LMorris804@aol.com
My real favorite places to read are in either my Lazy-Boy chair or in my bed. My ideal, my not available, place would be on a seat in a bay window where I could look out on trees, grass, etc. and have sunshine streaming in or enjoy the sound of rain on the window.
Ferrellac@aol.com
I read curled up in an old overstuffed rocking chair that belonged to my grandfather. The stuffing is coming out of it.....it's a rather horrid shade of green.....but, I can sit properly, or curl up, or throw a leg over the arm and read, read, READ!! This chair sat right next to the book cases in my
grandparent's home--now I know why!!
KatherineMC@aol.com
My ideal reading place does not exist, but if it did, it would have at least a couch, a bed (with lots of pillows), and a Recliner chair. I don't know about the rest of the world, but I can't always read sitting up or laying down. There would be lots of light in this room. Some of it would come from a window, but most of it would come from electric lamps that have 100 watt
bulbs in them. There would be a platter of fresh fruit (preferably grapes), crackers, cheese, and plenty of juice and ice water to wash it down with. This way I wouldn't have to leave any time soon. And no matter where my ideal reading place is, there would be a lock on the entrence and a "Do Not
Disturb" sign on the door.
Hotrodtami56@aol.com
My ideal place to read is in bed. When the kids are asleep.Or on the couch on a cold blustery day. With a nice cup of hot tea. Sitting at the lake front at the end of may, With the cool breeze shifting off the lake.
ADerra1298@aol.com
We have a room in our basement we call the "Library." We have wall to wall bookshelves and for Valentine's Day I bought my husband a chair and a half and an ottoman. The chair and a half pulls into a single sleeper and the ottoman is a storage ottoman where we can keep pillows and stuff. I now love
to curl up with a good book in that chair. I have read more books since we got that then I have in the last year. Everyone should have one!
ScuzBum@aol.com
I like any room where there is enough light and no television. I think my favorite place is my little 19 foot boat. She is very comfortable, and the natural light coming down the companionway is perfect for reading. No one bothers me there, and the gentle rocking of the boat is comforting. It's a
perfect getaway. I have many books on the shelf in my boat.
VALAITISH@aol.com
I live on 30 acres in the middle of the woods in Idaho. My favorite place to read is on my front porch on a warm summer day while the deer creep into the "front yard" because they think no one is around.
Blwbrdz1@aol.com
When the weather is nice, I love to read on my screened porch, in my favorite wicker rocker. There's nothing like reading with nature as the background noise. In the winter months, I read in my FROG (finished room over garage), which is my library. Absolutely no interuptions when I'm in that room.
WTHRGUESSR@aol.com
We developed a "reading room" out of a small bedroom. This is because of my disabilities. I read there at least part of every day, and far into the early morning at times, since all our children are now married and gone.. I am very comfortable there with my CD changer and stereo radio with classical
music. I read in my soft Lazy Boy recliner. I use the BookReporter and the Literary Guild monthlt flyier to give me a heads up about new books, as I read 2-3 books per week.
Bjs6418@aol.com
My favorite place to read is sitting in a beach chair at the beach with my head phones on, mt cooler filled and the warm sun on my face. Pure bliss.
StraskAub@aol.com
It's not very romantic... It's just "my" corner of the couch in the living room. My feet curled under me, maybe some soft music on, maybe not. I can actually picture my mother in the exact same position reading when I came home from school.
RJCONLON@aol.com
Lacey Booth and I take to the white living room couch, overlooking the solarium filled with tall New Hampshire trees or deep New Hampshire snow, and read read read. Right now I'm revisiting the out-of-print "Elvis and Gladys, " rereading Richard Wright's "Black Boy" (getting ready for the Oxford Conference of the Book in his honor this year at Ole Miss) and discovering
Bobby DeLaughter's "Never Too Late" about the conviction of De Lay in shooting Medgar Evers. Anything else you want to know?
DCCJ1@aol.com
Real. A warm and cozy sunroom over looking the lake on our property. It's great year round but the lake is also good in warm weather.
FaithAnnD@aol.com
I would like to find a place similar to where I read as a young girl. On the lawn, under 175 year old maple trees at my grandparents home in up state N.Y. The trees lined the front lawn and one had a place in the base where I could lay back against the tree and lose myself for hours in a book.
Jgerr@aol.com
I like to read in the quiet of my study.
Rdgbks@aol.com
at the beach...in a comfortable chair...facing the ocean!!
DDobrjansk@aol.com
The bestplace to read is on a back porch overlooking a body of water, preferably the Atlantic Ocean, somewhere on the East End of Long Island.
Magpie2U@aol.com
Currently I have this sort of threadworn overstuffed chair that I can curl up in completely. I have it under a sunny window with wooden wide slat blinds so I can control the direction of the light. I have a nice table alongside with books piled high all over it, of course, there is a lamp also. Since I live in a small house this set up is in a corner of my livingroom out of
view of the TV. Rarely is it quiet, so I just imagine that I am alone and enjoy it to the best of my ability. In my imagination I have a flowery overstuffed big chair with pillows all around and a fluffy ottoman, in the corner of my large, locked, quiet
bedroom. Next to it is a large sunny window and a bookcase full of all of my favorite books in hard copies. I picture the sunlight filtering in as I while away the afternoon lost in my favorite books. Thanks for the opportunity to share my fantasies...currently I am a 37 year old mom, wife, and full time college student looking forward to the summer when my reading will be for relaxation and not education!!
CHOOBAND@aol.com
My favorite place to read is curled up in front of a crackling fire in our family room while wrapped up in Grannie's handmade afghan and pillows all around propping me up to just the right position. Of course, the lights should be low with the exception of my reading lamp which is usually turned to the brightest control. It is very late in the evening, the house is quiet with just an occasional creak of the wooden floor as the house is still settling. All family members are tucked in for the night giving me the much needed and deserved peace and quiet I so crave. This is my time. My very own precious time to relax and enjoy a wonderful book by one of my favorite authors. There won't be any interruptions of any kind as the world has slowed it's pace for the day. Telephones, televisions, radios and more long ago have been muted and put in there place for another day. The happenings in the world around me can wait and are not allowed in my private space. Absorbing more and more of this alluring book, I only become more engrossed in each new chapter. I could sit there the whole night long without even a
yawn. However, after just a few brief hours of enjoyment, I have to mark my place and climb the stairs to my room. If I am not careful, daylight will be peeking in under the window coverings and I will not have slept at all. If only I could do this sort of thing more often, I would be absolutely thrilled. I live for the quiet moments and my glorious books. I wish I had
time for more of each.
W97art@aol.com
What is my ideal place to read, real or imagined? Comfortably sprawled in loose clothing, among the faded plaid pillows on the sturdy wicker couch in the golden sun room, I find myself in the most ideal place to read The only interruption may be a few squawks of the Egyptian Geese floating on the canal outside. Ahhhhhh....heavenly.
Lankford0714@aol.com
In the guest bedroom, in bed, with lots of pillows and blankets (in the winter) and with the door closed, this is where I make the most progress reading a book. I love it!
SHILOH57@aol.com
I read in a tree, about 25 feet off the ground. It has a back-rest, and everything. Perfect for a day of reading.
SonyaDreams@aol.com
As a "grown-up", I don't have a favorite place. As a child my favorite place to read was on a rug underneath our baby grand piano in the living room. The sun came through the window in the mid afternoon to illuminate whatever I was reading, and warm me as well.
KennethRMartin@aol.com
My best place to read is in a recliner with a footstool in my library with floor to ceiling bookcases and a library table stacked with books I'm currently working on. I guess I am lucky (so you can all be jealous) since I also have a gazebo overlooking the countryside which I do want to read in although I never have. And to make you drool a little more, I also have a picnic table at the end of a wooded path on a high ridge overlooking my
house, the entire neighborhood, and the countryside. It seems like it would be very enjoyable to read at the picnic table.
C17itzme@aol.com
Well it has to be imagined until my retirement. I envision a place either in the deep woods or oceanfront. Something I can rest my eyes on when they tire from reading those many books that I have collected over the years. Some read & some just waiting for me. The chair will have to be a special & super comfortable one for my old age & weary bones. Still many years away from now
EISCO10@aol.com
When the morning sun is on my driveway, especially in the winter, I like to sit in my car and read. Total isolation!
Preserved@aol.com
My ideal place to read is definitely my hammock at the edge of a cliff overlooking Grand Lake. The only flaw is, I can be asleep in minutes in that hammock!
Ezcross@aol.com
On the beach - any beach
MScaramell@aol.com
I love curling up in bed with a good book.
Mocky1@aol.com
My favorite place to read is in the bathtub. I stand up all day and am surrounded by people, so at night I run a hot bath, pour a glass of wine, and settle in with a good book. Even my 11yo son is sweet enough to give me that 30 minutes or so to myself. It saves my sanity!
PandyPNut@aol.com
My best place to read is curled up on the sofa in the family room in the winter with the fireplace going and in the summer same place but with the ceiling fan on. I also do some reading in bed but usually I try not to because if it's a really good book I can't sleep until I have read more.
