A woman who leaves no trace behind, other than the dreams and nightmares that now plague Anneke every night. Spurred by her desire for vengeance and armed with the latest forensic and investigatory techniques, Anneke puts together a team of detectives to catch this mysterious serial killer. There’s a trail of victims across Europe, and Anneke is certain they’re all connected. But during the years spent relentlessly hunting the killer, Anneke keeps crucial evidence to herself: infuriatingly coy letters, addressed only to her, occasionally soaked in blood, and always signed Diavola.

About the Book

An obsession with an immortal serial killer entangles a vampire hunter’s daughter in a sapphic romance in this enthralling gothic fantasy from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of LUCY UNDYING.

Anneke has a complicated relationship with her father, Abraham Van Helsing --- doctor, scientist and madman devoted to the study of vampires --- until the night she comes home to find him murdered, with a surreally beautiful woman looming over his body. A woman who leaves no trace behind, other than the dreams and nightmares that now plague Anneke every night.

Spurred by her desire for vengeance and armed with the latest forensic and investigatory techniques, Anneke puts together a team of detectives to catch this mysterious serial killer. Because her father isn’t the only inexplicable dead body.

The closer Anneke gets to her devil, though, the less sense the world makes. Maybe her father wasn’t a madman after all. Diavola might be something much worse than a serial killer...and much harder to destroy. Yet as Anneke unearths more of Diavola’s tragic past, she suspects there’s still a heart somewhere in that undead body.

A heart that beats for Anneke alone.

In my part of Canada, we don’t generally refer to a surprise ending or unannounced departure as an “Irish goodbye,” so I had no idea how personal Beth Ann Fennelly’s eponymous new micro-memoir collection would be. If she had used terms like “French exit,” “over the bridge,” “ghosting” or “leaving by the cellar door,” I might have had an inkling. Read More

What can we learn from an ordinary life observed with extraordinary skill? In THE IRISH GOODBYE, Beth Ann Fennelly writes of the small moments that shape a life, in the process dignifying the diminutive through the act of attention. Fennelly explores her roles as a friend, wife, mother and daughter, documenting a brush with an old flame or the devastating death of her sister in crystalline, precise sentences. The longer essays concern Fennelly’s relationships --- with a beloved mother-in-law, a decades-long friendship between five former college roommates, an artist who paints a series of nude portraits in Fennelly’s town, for which she poses. Interspersed between these longer memoirs are sections of flash nonfiction, a form Fennelly innovated in the genre-defying HEATING & COOLING.

About the Book

A new, genre-defying volume that explores family, marriage, motherhood, place and coming of age with singular wit and emotional clarity.

What can we learn from an ordinary life observed with extraordinary skill? In THE IRISH GOODBYE, Beth Ann Fennelly writes of the small moments that shape a life, whether moving or perplexing or troubling or gladdening, in the process dignifying the diminutive through the act of attention. With dazzling verve and wit, they capture the interstitial interactions --- encounters with strangers, quirky observations, unexpected flights of fancy --- that make up a richly lived life.

THE IRISH GOODBYE offers a rare pleasure: intimacy. With emotional clarity and nimble prose, Fennelly invites readers to share her affirming worldview --- one in which even our smallest interactions are rife with possibility.

It’s 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland. Twelve-year-old Janey Devine lives with her grandmother, Maggie, in Possilpark, a neighborhood that is rough around the edges but mostly full of good (albeit nosy) people. Maggie has worked hard to provide for Janey --- both a safe place to live and as much joy and support as possible --- ever since Janey’s parents and sister died in a terrible accident when she was just a baby. Maggie’s own life has been full of violence and loss, which makes things all the worse when Janey stumbles onto a horrific crime scene. Read More

Glasgow, 1979: If it hadn’t been for her wee stupid dog, Sid Vicious, 12-year-old Janey Devine might never have stumbled upon the corpse of Samantha Watson. And then maybe she’d still be able to sleep at night. And maybe her nana wouldn’t be so worried all the time. And maybe Billy “The Ghost” Watson, a notorious gangster, wouldn’t be on her tail --- for it’s Billy’s daughter who was left for dead on those train tracks, and now Billy wants answers. Fear and gossip have spread through the tight-knit community of Possilpark, and while Janey swears she can’t remember the details of that morning, the cops think she’s hiding something. And indeed, there’s something she knows that she’s not quite ready to tell anyone, not even her nana, who won’t rest until this whole thing is behind them.

THE HOSPITAL AT THE END OF THE WORLD is as much a warning to the world as it is a medical/mystery novel. Justin C. Key implies (or sometimes says boldly and unequivocally) that Artificial Intelligence presents a potential danger to humanity that we ignore at our own very real peril. Though the book deals specifically with the effects of a future AI on our medical systems and beliefs, we can see all too clearly the frightening effects that the technology poses for all of us. In a time not so far from our own, society is run by a global AI system. The Shepherd Organization oversees every medical school in the country save one in New Orleans, the renegade Hippocrates, which still insists on human-led medicine. It is the last choice school for an ambitious young New Yorker named Pok. But after his father --- himself a physician --- dies under mysterious circumstances that seem connected to “the shepherds” and their megalomaniacal young CEO, Pok finds himself on a quest for answers that leads right to Hippocrates. Once enrolled, he stumbles upon a further mystery: a strange illness is plaguing newcomers to New Orleans who grew up under shepherd rule. What is causing this fatal anomaly? And how does it relate to the mystery of Pok’s father’s death and his own mysterious past?

Though she published her first novel in 1977, Australian writer Helen Garner’s name is not one that’s well-known to American readers. That may change with the publication of STORIES: The Collected Short Fiction, but its arrival comes with a cautionary note. Those looking for conventional short stories with beginnings, middles and ends won’t find them here, and the pleasures of her writing will have to be derived from other aspects of this brief collection. It's Not Her by Mary Kubica

March 2026

Over the years, I have enjoyed Mary Kubica’s novels. But she has taken the craft of her thriller writing to a new level with the release of IT’S NOT HER.

In it, two families who are related --- Courtney Gray’s best friend, Emily, is married to her brother, Nathan --- are at a rustic resort in northern Wisconsin. We start with the oh-so-familiar vacation narrative about “who got the better cabin.” You know that if there are two places, this is bound to be part of the conversation. On the first night, Courtney’s daughter, Cass, begs to have a sleepover with her cousin, Mae, which Courtney allows. Courtney hears a scream in the night --- a blood-curdling one.

Rachel Hochhauser, author of Lady Tremaine

Twice-widowed, Lady Etheldreda Verity Isolde Tremaine Bramley is solely responsible for her two children, a priggish stepdaughter, a razor-taloned peregrine falcon, and a crumbling manor. Fierce and determined, Ethel clings to the respectability her deceased husband’s title affords her, hoping it will secure her daughters’ future through marriage. When a royal ball offers the chance to change everything, Ethel risks her pride in pursuit of an invitation for all three of her daughters --- only to see her hopes fulfilled by the wrong one. As an engagement to the future king unfolds, Ethel discovers a sordid secret hidden in the depths of the royal family, forcing her to choose between the security she craves and the well-being of the stepdaughter who has rebuffed her at every turn.

March 13, 2026

Not only is Mercury retrograde until next Friday, this is the second Friday the 13th in two months. The 28 days in February ensures that for three years out of four, the dates in February and March line up, which is great for scheduling. We had an oh-so-lovely taste of spring/summer this week that allowed me to pull out skorts and t-shirts. A realization: skorts look a lot better with tanned legs than winter white legs. Still, after a brutal winter of snow and ice, the quick change in weather was a real treat. But the snowflakes that fell for a few minutes yesterday and the sudden drop in temperature was a definite “thoughts of spring” game killer.
