April 2009

Earlier this month, I was on the Outer Banks with my family. When we travel there are clothes, golf clubs (for my husband and younger son) and lots and lots of books. Now we were only gone for 10 days, but I brought enough books to take up two shelves in the tiny office that they have at the rental house. My 14-year-old son had 10 books, plus all seven Harry Potter books. I am not sure what he was thinking when he packed the Potter titles. I guess he figured if he ran out of new books to read he would have some surefire backups! I am sure that since you love books like we do, you can relate. I am just glad we were driving this trip since we definitely would have been over the weight limit on the plane!

Agatha Awards 2008

Established in 1989, Malice Domestic is an annual convention in metropolitan Washington, DC, saluting "mysteries of manners", books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie. The Agatha Awards honor the "traditional mystery" -- loosely defined as mysteries which contain no explicit sex nor excessive gore or violence; and feature an amateur detective (usually), a confined setting, and characters who know one another.

Ever had a night when it's easier to just keeping typing on the couch rather than move? I am writing this note on Thursday night when I SHOULD be packing for LA as I am flying out early Friday morning to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. Instead, I am writing the newsletter opener. When I leave town, I worry that I will not have power, a battery that works or an Internet connection, and thus the newsletter will not get done. This from a woman who travels with a backup battery and a Verizon air card. Okay, okay, I always am overprepared.

There’s a great new book coming out next month: The Photographer. The book features the breathtaking work of Didier Lefèvre, who documented the work of Doctors Without Borders in Afghanistan beginning in 1986.

Some days are busier than others. Today is one of those busy days. I'm getting ready to update GraphicNovelReporter.com with new content (see below) and avoiding packing (one of the things I really hate doing). Even though I hate packing, I love the reason for packing, and this one is a good one. Tomorrow, I'll be in Dublin for a week's vacation. That will be a wonderful trip, hopefully, and I'm looking forward to doing all the touristy things...as well as checking out a Dublin comics shop or two. (If you know of any, send me an email; I want to know where the best places to go are.)

Challengers Comics + Conversation is our comic book store, and I love it. My name is Patrick Brower, and co-owner W. Dal Bush and I opened Challengers in an attempt to create and maintain the kind of comic book environment we always wanted to shop in. I think we did a pretty good job, and while I love showing Challengers off, I always feel weird talking about it. More so, trying to write our own store biography always comes across as self-congratulatory and conceited.
