Middle school is a time of many changes. With children having outgrown the simpler stories of grade school, but not yet quite ready for the more mature works of high school, middle school librarians have to take extra special care of their book offerings. With manga and graphic novels reaching new levels of popularity, particularly with that age group, here’s what some librarians are facing on the job now.

Yesterday morning the phone rang with a wakeup call. When I answered I wanted to ask, “What city am I in?” It’s been that kind of a week.
I never use alarm clocks in hotels since each one is different, and I really do not have time to learn how to use them. I figure it’s easier to have this handled by someone else. In New York a person called to wake me, in Chicago there was music playing when I answered, and here in DC I again have a person who asked if I would like the weather as well. Every year, southern California hosts the largest anime and manga convention in the country, Anime Expo. Over 44,000 guests attended this year’s convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 2nd to 5th. For the avid graphic novel reader, a day in the exhibit hall is like a day at Willie Wonka’s factory. That is…if Willie Wonka was a cosplaying, manga-reading fanboy. And hey, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Welcome to another update of GraphicNovelReporter.com. We’ve been busy putting a lot of content together in between plane trips around here (seriously, I feel like this has been my most traveled summer ever). As you may recall from the last newsletter, my most recent trip was a sad one as I went home for my father’s funeral. I want to say thank you to everyone who wrote me after that newsletter came out. I was so touched by the outpouring of responses that came in. Your well-wishes, thoughts, and prayers were really appreciated, and I am grateful to all of you who shared your own stories and kind words. It's really great to know we have such thoughtful readers.

Handling the PR and marketing for Image Comics is only one of the many things that keep Joe Keatinge busy. Just nominated for a Harvey Award for
Popgun, Volume 2, which he coedited with Mark Andrew Smith, Keatinge has just written an
open letter explaining why the Harveys matter—and why they should be supported throughout the comics industry. He’s also set to announce he’ll be coediting another original graphic novel, this time with illustrator Jim Rugg and a writer he describes as someone “whose made his name well-known in another medium.” While we wait for that announcement, read up on Joe and his love of the graphic format.
