It’s my pleasure to welcome you to this special summer issue of GNR. We have a lot going on this week!

First the GNR team will be doing two events at BookExpo America in New York. That’s the annual convention of book trade convention where publishers tout their fall titles. It’s basically one gigantic party celebrating books. Carol is on the Thursday morning panel “Big-Name Authors with Graphic Novels: How Will This Change the Market?” at 9:30. Considering the impact works from the likes of Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer have already made, and with works coming from James Patterson, Janet Evanovich, and Dean Koontz, the topic is one that many publishers have already speculated on --- and I’m curious to see what the panel members will have to say. Later that day, at 2:30, I’ll be moderating the panel “Hot Fall Graphic Novels for Libraries.” I’ll be joined by a panel of great librarians who are all making their picks for what’s going to be of interest to libraries later this year. We'll share their selections with you in the next update.

About the Book

As teenagers, they witnessed their parents' murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman's victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker.

After a devastating hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina, Rebecca and Adam urge Maya to join them in the relief effort. To please her husband, Maya finally agrees. She loses herself in the care and transport of victims, but when her helicopter crashes into raging floodwaters, there appear to be no survivors.

Forced to accept Maya is gone, Rebecca and Adam turn to one another --- first for comfort, then in passion --- unaware that, miles from civilization, Maya is injured and trapped with strangers she's not certain she can trust. Away from the sister who has always been there to save her, now Maya must find the courage to save herself --- unaware that the life she knew has changed forever.

About the Book

With all the elements of a classic fable, vivid descriptions, and a wholly unique style, this idiosyncratic debut introduces a new and exciting voice to readers of such authors as George Saunders, Kurt Vonnegut, and Yann Martel.

In LIGHT BOXES, the inhabitants of one closely-knit town are experiencing perpetual February. It turns out that a god-like spirit who lives in the sky, named February, is punishing the town for flying, and bans flight of all kind, including hot air balloons and even children's kites. It's February who makes the sun nothing but a faint memory, who blankets the ground with snow, who freezes the rivers and the lakes. As endless February continues, children go missing and more and more adults become nearly catatonic with depression. But others find the strength to fight back, waging war on February.
