January 2011

Everywhere we look, people are talking about the weather; last week, 49 states all had snow, and most people are seeing temperatures that are a lot lower than usual across the country. We here in New York just got hit with 16 inches of snow, and the novelty is wearing off. My son has missed four days of school, and I confess that when the phone rings at 5AM, I wonder WHO in our town is getting up that early for school. Around our house, a 6:30 call would be just fine! Spring isn't that far off, though --- only 50 more days to go (but who's counting?).

One of the biggest things we did last year was to unveil our Core Lists of graphic novels and manga, which were a long time in the making. In fact, these lists were one of the first goals Carol had for GNR when we launched the site. As the Core Lists were culled with librarians and educators in mind, we wanted to be sure that they have all the information needed to make them useful. With this update I am happy to share that in addition to adding ISBNs to all the featured titles, we also have created downloadable PDF files. We feel that this will make them more useful for our readers --- and to those in the education and library marketplace who need it to easily place orders.

January 2011

We hope everyone's holidays were great, and filled with some of winter's most anticipated books, especially given our recent snowy and frigidly cold days! We here in New York have been dealing with more snow this week. Here we go again! My son has missed three days of school, and I confess that when the phone rings at 5AM, I wonder WHO in our town is getting up that early for school? Around our house, a 6:30 call would be just fine! Spring isn't that far off, though --- only 52 more days to go (but who's counting?).

Deep Down True by Juliette Fay

January 2011

Readers may remember Juliette Fay from her debut novel, SHELTER ME, which was one of my early Bets On selections. She returns with a new Bets On selection this week, DEEP DOWN TRUE.Here, Dana Stellgarten is newly divorced and still a bit jangled about it. She has two kids with divided lives, shuffling between their mom and dad, a niece who shows up on her doorstep in all her Goth glory to clock some time with her, and enough drama in her life to make a woman get a job for some sanity as well as a paycheck.

Interview: Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn: The Graphic Novel

Jan 25, 2011

Peter S. Beagle’s beloved novel The Last Unicorn was published in 1968, followed by a successful children’s film in 1982. Now it has been made into a graphic novel published by IDW and another manga-inspired Last Unicorn is in the works. GraphicNovelReporter spoke to Beagle about the process of making The Last Unicorn into a graphic novel, how he originally came up with some of the characters for it, and which of his other works are being adapted to the comics medium.
